WORKSHOP: Beyond Alignment: Seeing Bodies (Richmond, VA)
July 20, 2019 @ 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm EDT$50
Beyond Alignment: Seeing Bodies
A workshop to better understand individual anatomy on the mat.
For movement teachers and movers, there’s a vast sea between:
Seeing a body as something to maneuver into poses, versus
Seeing a body as something to appreciate and uplift through movement
The statement that follows may require a paradigm shift: We can become bogged down by alignment concepts.
Alignment – the idea that yoga poses should look a certain way – can overshadow the gorgeous kaleidoscope of unique anatomy in front of us.
In some ways alignment sets us free: to build strength, perhaps to keep us safe, but it can also restrict teachers and students alike and even potentially cause injury. Adherence to alignment — which often doesn’t mesh with real life anatomy — can make it harder to teach the unique human in front of us.
This workshop helps to reclaim your understanding of each person’s unique anatomy. How do we go beyond aspirational alignment and truly SEE bodies?
We will cover:
Understanding and honoring the individual in front of you
Knowing the limits of what can we learn by looking at bodies
Influences of: torso and limb length
Curves and quirks
Hyperextension at the elbows and knees
Asymmetries and the basics of scoliosis
How to “See” the room in group teaching
How to “See” your student in private teaching
3 Contact hours for registered yoga teachers.
This workshop is geared toward yoga and movement teachers, but all of those with intermediate and above yoga experience are welcome.
